Real talk on China's most traveler-friendly cities. No fluff, no tourist traps, just what you actually need to know.
Beijing The Imperial Capital
Vibe: Ancient power meets modern swagger. Think Forbidden City mornings and craft-beer hutong nights.
Don’t Miss:
- The Forbidden City (book tickets 7 days ahead โ seriously)
- Temple of Heaven at sunrise
- Great Wall at Mutianyu (fewer crowds than Badaling)
- Hutong alleyways around Nanluoguxiang
Joran’s Real Tip: “Skip the Wangfujing snack street. It’s a tourist trap. Instead, hit Jingzun for Peking duck like a local.”
Getting Around: Subway is king. Get a Beijing Transit Card or just use Alipay’s transit QR.
Shanghai The Future City
Vibe: Blade Runner with better soup dumplings. Skyscrapers, colonial architecture, and the best metro system in China.
Don’t Miss:
- The Bund at night (neon reflections on the river)
- Yu Garden for classic Chinese gardens
- Tianzifang for artsy alleyways and cafes
- Shanghai Tower observation deck (2nd tallest building in the world)
Joran’s Real Tip: “Take the ferry across the Huangpu River at sunset. It’s 2 RMB and beats any tourist cruise.”
Getting Around: Metro covers everything. Didi (ride-hailing) is cheap and fast.
Xi’an Ancient Heart
Vibe: Where China’s history lives. Terracotta warriors, Muslim Quarter street food, and the most intact ancient city wall.
Don’t Miss:
- Terracotta Warriors (go early, hire a guide at the gate)
- Cycling the Ancient City Wall
- Muslim Quarter at night (lamb skewers + pomegranate juice)
- Big Wild Goose Pagoda fountain show
Joran’s Real Tip: “The warriors are cool, but the Muslim Quarter is where the magic happens. Try the yangroupaomo (lamb bread soup) โ it’s a full meal and a half.”
Getting Around: Metro is limited but growing. Taxis and Didi are cheap.
Chengdu Home of Pandas and Spice
Vibe: Laid-back, spicy, and unapologetically fun. Tea houses, mahjong parks, and the best food in China (fight me).
Don’t Miss:
- Chengdu Panda Base (go before 8 AM when they’re active)
- People’s Park for tea and ear-cleaning (yes, really)
- Jinli Ancient Street (touristy but pretty at night)
- Sichuan Opera face-changing show
Joran’s Real Tip: “This is my home base. Ask me anything, especially about hot pot. Pro move: order ‘wei la’ (mildly spicy) unless you want to cry.”
Getting Around: Metro is excellent. Biking is popular too โ Chengdu is flat.
Guilin China’s Postcard Landscape
Vibe: Where the mountains meet the river. Karst peaks rising from emerald waters, ancient villages, and the most photographed scenery in China.
Don’t Miss:
- Li River Cruise (4-hour boat ride to Yangshuo)
- Elephant Trunk Hill (Guilin’s iconic landmark)
- Reed Flute Cave (a magical underground world)
- Seven Star Park with Camel Mountain
Joran’s Real Tip: “Book your Li River cruise for early morning. The mist over the mountains is pure magic, and the crowds are thinner.”
Getting Around: Buses connect everything. Rent an electric bike to explore the countryside.
Yangshuo Slow Travel Paradise
Vibe: Guilin’s laid-back little sister. Bicycle rides through rice fields, bamboo rafting, and a backpacker vibe that’s been going strong since the 90s.
Don’t Miss:
- Yulong River Bamboo Rafting (quieter than Li River)
- West Street (cafes, shops, and street performers)
- Moon Hill (climb 800 steps for panoramic views)
- Ten-Mile Gallery scenic cycling route
- Impression Liu Sanjie (spectacular outdoor light show)
Joran’s Real Tip: “Rent a bike and cycle along the Yulong River. Stop at the little villages for lunch โ you’ll find the best beer fish in town.”
Getting Around: Bicycle is king here. Rent one for ~20 RMB/day and explore.
